French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the importance of security guarantees in any potential peace deal for Ukraine during his meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House.
Macron insisted that peace should not equate to surrender for Ukraine but should involve concrete assurances. In contrast, Trump focused on the financial responsibilities of European nations in ensuring peace, rather than explicitly mentioning security guarantees.
While Macron and Trump exchanged pleasantries during their meeting, disparities emerged regarding the strategy for ending the conflict in Ukraine.
Trump advocated for an immediate ceasefire and expressed willingness to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to facilitate this.
In contrast, Macron proposed a more comprehensive approach, involving a truce followed by a robust peace agreement with long-term protections for Ukraine.
Despite these differences, both leaders agreed on the necessity of deploying European peacekeeping forces to support peace efforts in Ukraine.
Diplomatic engagement with Russia
Macron commended Trump’s diplomatic engagement with Putin, acknowledging the rationale behind such interactions.
Trump, refraining from labeling Putin a “dictator,” indicated his intention to meet with the Russian leader following a recent phone call. The leaders expressed a mutual interest in fostering peace discussions and ensuring the respect of agreements.
As the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine unfolded, global leaders, including Ukrainian President Zelensky, emphasized the need to resolve the conflict.
Calls for expedited delivery of weapons and ammunition to Ukraine underscored the ongoing severity of the situation.
The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution reaffirming support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, despite differing stances from the US.
The EU and UK implemented further sanctions on Russia, targeting key sectors and individuals allegedly involved in supporting the conflict.
