The Madrid derby between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid descended into chaos as fans threw objects onto the pitch. In a heated derby, Atletico Madrid secured a 1-1 draw against Real Madrid. This is all thanks to a stoppage-time equalizer from Angel Correa.
After the game was postponed due to crowd unrest, Eder Militao’s well-taken goal appeared to be enough to give Real an away victory. But Correa, the substitute, barged into the Real box and scored, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
After a lengthy delay caused by the referee stopping play and pulling both sets of players off the field, the play at Metropolitano Stadium eventually resumed.
This game which paused for over 20 minutes saw Atletico Madrid’s captain Koke and the manager Diego Simeone walk over to the team’s supporters to calm them down.
These had been throwing objects towards Real’s Belgian goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois including a lighter. After the game restarted, Real looked to be edging towards all three points in the fiery game but Angel Correa spoiled the party late.
The Los Rojiblancos’ Marcos Llorente received a red card late into the game. This was after a late challenge on R. Madrid’s Fran Gracia in the 9th minute of additional time.
This result left Real second on the La Liga table 3 points behind Barcelona who lost to Osasuna 4-2 on Saturday. Atletico on the other hand is 3rd five and two points behind both Barca and Real respectively.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side will play French side Lille in the Champions League this week. Atletico will also be playing in the same competition against Benfica.
