Maj Gen Kahinda Otafiire; The future Of The Ruling Party Is Hanging In Balance

Maj Gen Kahinda Otafiire has said the future of the ruling party is hanging in balance. The internal affairs minister says if the NRM of 1986 and the NRM of now meet, they may not recognize each other. He says the shift from the values of NRM that were set is so damaging that he sometimes feels embarrassed.

“The NRM of 1986 and the NRM now are not the same. If the two were to meet, they wouldn’t recognize each other. There are many things that as pioneers we believed in and held dear but have now changed. You find profiteers and all sorts of characters including criminals wearing the NRM t-shirt. Many of these conduct business in the name of NRM but with their own selfish interests.”

He said this while speaking during the NRM ideological orientation lectures for staff and members living within the country and those in the diaspora.

He says sometimes he doesn’t feel like living his bed after reading the corruption stories in the press.

“Sometimes I feel like not leaving the bed when I hear and read of stories in the press about corruption that has taken over our institution. I shudder that we can rub shoulders with the corrupt and corruption becomes a style. It is appalling that we can operate with manipulators who get money and start manipulating events so much that it becomes fashionable for everyone to be corrupt,” Otafiire said.

Otafiire is not the first person to question the future of the NRM party. Many people have said if nothing is done, NRM is going to end up in history like it never happened at all. They should go back to the drawing board and tackle the problems within and outside before this happens.
