South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns successfully navigated the quarter-final stage and are set to square off against record champions Al Ahly in the upcoming Caf Champions League semi-finals.
The PSL winners secured a spot in the next round by holding hosts Esperance of Tunisia to a goalless draw in Tunis, clinching a 1-0 aggregate victory following their earlier triumph at home.
The tension mounted in Tunis as Esperance saw their celebrations curtailed in the second half when a goal was disallowed after a protracted VAR review, much to the relief of the visiting Mamelodi Sundowns.
Notably, Ugandan football legend Denis Onyango remained among the unused substitutes during the match.
In a separate showdown, Al Ahly emerged victorious with a 1-0 away win over Al Hilal of Sudan in Mauritania, securing a 2-0 aggregate triumph. The Egyptian powerhouse demonstrated their prowess on the field, advancing to the next stage of the competition.
Nail-biting encounter for Pyramids
Pyramids faced a tense battle as they nearly surrendered their first-leg advantage in a 2-0 defeat against FAR Rabat.
However, Pyramids managed to cling to their lead and secured a narrow 4-3 aggregate victory, securing their passage to the next round of the tournament.
As the competition intensifies, Pyramids eagerly anticipate the outcome of the match between South Africa’s Orlando Pirates and MC Alger.
The Buccaneers currently hold a 1-0 advantage from the initial leg and await their fate in the upcoming clash, poised to determine their semi-final opponent.
