Manchester City delivered a resounding statement last night as they moved to familiar territory on the Premier League table. The win against Arsenal yesterday pushed City to the top of the table making it the first time this season the team has been in this position.
At the final whistle, City players were seen celebrating in front of their traveling fans in one corner of the stadium. At this point, Pep Guardiola had nothing but smile all over his face, and probably a little relief.
Kevin De Bruyne gave City the lead in the 24th minute of the game but Arsenal were rewarded a controversial penalty in the 42nd. This however, couldn’t enable the Gunners to secure a win against Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland in the second half.
Just a month ago, Manchester City trailed Arsenal by a whole eight points. However, City are now firmly in contention to retain the title.
Despite Arsenal having a game in hand, City managed to finish a frenetic encounter with the momentum in the title race.
There hasn’t been any doubt that the hyper-competitive Pep desired to lift the Premier League trophy again. However, it has not always been so clear that his team shared the same desire for success.
They had defeats at Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham, as well as a home loss to Brentford. In addition to that, a surprise League Cup exit at Southampton, gave the impression that all was not well in the City camp.
However though, at long last the team is back in familiar territory. Despite them being on top, Pep still refused to label City as title favorites.
“We won against Arsenal at the Emirates. They have one game in hand so I consider they are still top of the league. There are still so many games to play, the Champions League is coming as well,” he said.
