The Democratic Party (DP) bloc is actively considering Mathias Mpuuga, the former Leader of Opposition in Parliament, as their front-runner for president as the 2026 elections draw near.
This choice was made in the midst of continuing conversations within the opposition concerning strategic partnerships. This is especially in light of the movement’s disappointment with People Power.
Donning shirts bearing Mpuuga’s portrait, the members of the DP Bloc criticized the administration of Robert Kyagulanyi saying he had betrayed them.
Michael Mabikke, a well-known member of the DP bloc, declared recently that the coalition would back Mpuuga. He underlined that after encountering difficulties in their prior coalitions, they made this decision because they needed strong leadership.
Additionally, Mabikke also used the occasion to criticize the widespread lies in Ugandan politics. He stressed the significance of honesty and openness in the next election.
Mpuuga is viewed as a candidate who can bring together different opposition forces. This is because of his outspoken criticism of the existing leadership. The DP bloc’s approach is part of a larger initiative to garner support and mount a serious challenge in the 2026 presidential election.
It should be noted that the Nyendo-Mukungwe MP fell out with NUP’s hierarchy a few months ago. This led to his being dropped as the Leader of Opposition. He was replaced with Hon Joel Ssenyonyi.
Further attempts to drop him as the party’s deputy have been unsuccessful. Despite the party asking him to resign, Mpuuga has adamantly refused.
He still views himself as the party’s deputy president in the Central Region. Besides, NUP is yet to announce a vacancy or fill this position.
