Effective July 2020,Mbale and Masaka districts will become cities, local government Minister Jenipher Namuyangu has announced.
She however says the two cities will require additional 12.3bn in the financial year 2020/2021 by finance ministry to be operationalized.
“Amotion for the approval and creation of 15 cities will be ranked by minister of local government within two weeks,”Namuyangu said.
Meanwhile Nakasongola, Kabale, Soroti and Moroto will be effectively in 2023 /2024. Lira and Entebbe will be operational used second and third phase.
Namuyangu says the development is in line with Uganda vision 2040 that envisages an urbanised Uganda with middle income status.
On 20th May, cabinet approved the phased operationisation of 15 cities.
Mbale and Masaka are the oldest towns gazetted before Uganda independence
Other districts operationised as cities include Arua, Gulu Fort portal Jinja, Mbale, Masaka operational is financial year 2020/2021
