This new law gives news organizations greater power to negotiate fees for the content shared on Facebook.
In 2021, Facebook got suspended briefly in Australia after they passed a similar law. Meta has claimed that Facebook as a matter of fact provides more traffic to struggling news outlets.
Publishers reportedly post their content on Facebook because it benefits their bottom line.
Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar, with bipartisan support, introduced the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA) to congress.
The legislation would apparently provide greater authority to publishers to collectively bargain with social media companies.
Different media companies say that Meta harvests a lot of revenue from news articles shared on the platform.
Apparently, as Meta made huge profits during the pandemic as local news particularly struggled. the company has however labeled this assumption as wrong, saying it instead drives traffic to news sources.
Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said.“If Congress passes an ill-considered journalism bill as part of national security legislation, we will be forced to consider removing news from our platform altogether,”
