The circumstances under which the military held them are currently unclear.
Former president Boubacar Keita got overthrown in August 2020 and president Ndaw has been in power since then. He had to use his 18-month transition period to organize an election and help return Mali into civilian rule.
However, the move by the military has extensively shown disapproval for the cabinet changes. And this could only expose how the country’s pulse has all along been under military control.
During the reshuffling, president Bah Ndaw replaced three officials who had led the coup against Keita last August. They arrested the three after this move. The military did not release any immediate comments although various diplomats in Bamako warned their citizens to stay indoors.
The US Embassy in Mali reported military activity in the capital and advised nationals to be very cautious.
The French colony has registered a history of coup attempts in the past. As for Mr Keita, the military overthrew him after dissatisfaction with his policy to combat insurgents in the North.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern through a Twitter post. He also urged calm. In the same spirit, European Union leaders condemned what they called ‘’kidnapping’’ of Mali’s civilian leadership.
