“The incidence of infectious and non-communicable diseases such as malaria, cholera, asthma, typhoid, bilharzia, dysentery and acute respiratory infections will rise to outbreak levels,”
However, Dr Joyce informed the public that the government has already set aside the budget for vaccines. They will vaccinate people living in cholera prone areas first. The means to stop the spread of diarrhoea is underway before the bad gets worse. Meanwhile, she noted the steady progress the government has shown in fighting water-borne diseases.
Dr Joyce also noted the districts that should be under vivid watch for these waterborne diseases due to rain. Among them are; Ntororo, Hoima, Busia, Kasese, Nebbi, Pakwach, Zombo, Bullisa, and Kikuube.
The Ministry of health could consider sensitization at a very personal level. This warning may not even reach the people who are most concerned if it stops at the media level. Sending volunteers to those hot spot districts could as well help.
Meanwhile, massive rains are not only bringing health hazards but also road-related hazards. The flooding that has been witnessed in Kampala areas is causing alarm as well. Kampala City Council Authority should work on the roads and trenches before we witness more damage. Floods can cause a number of accidents.
