These claims include media outlets rescinding calls of certain states changing their projections in ways that disfavor Joe Biden. These claims are completely untrue. But they continue to circulate virally on social media.
In a vivid example, a YouTube video wrongly claiming Joe Biden is ‘’losing’’ his status as US president-elect has racked up more than 1 million views. As of Tuesday afternoon, the video had been shared widely in a top-performing Facebook group devoted to politics.
The main source that inspired the video is a misinformed and now-removed tweet by Trump adviser Pam Bondi. He falsely claimed that the website RealClearPolitics had reversed its projection in Pennsylvania’s Electoral College votes. Trump’s personal lawyer has made this claim severally, Rudy Giuliani, among others.
But RealClearPolitics’ co-founder Tom Bevan publicly debunked the claim on Monday evening.
‘’We never called Pennsylvania and nothing has changed,’’ Bevan Tweeted.
What media houses say;
Many major outlets all projected Joe Biden as the winner in Pennsylvania and none are backing away from that call. As of Trump’s legal challenges, there isn’t any indication that they threaten Biden’s lead in the state.
Biden led by 47,000 votes as of Tuesday in Pennsylvania which is about 87 times as much as the 537 votes that separated George Bush and Al Gore in Florida in 2000. The lead is even still growing.
Such posts that mislead the public can incite acts of violence from the readers if not deleted. But some experts warn that for some internet users, it may be already too late for that.
