Missing NUP Supporter Wins Mpigi LC Elections

Mr. Abdul Rashid Nkinga commonly known as Jjaja Katikanyonyi is said to have been kidnapped by unknown gunmen. He is a supporter of the National Unity Platform and an aspirant for Buwama Town Council chairperson seat. His kidnap happened on January 1, 2021, and his whereabouts are still unknown.

Abdul’s colleague, Mr. Baker Kalyango aka Engo ya Firebase got arrested in Kalangala district in December 2020. This happened during the time at which former presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi campaigned in the Islands of Sese.

Ms. Flavia Mujurizi, the Electoral Commission registrar in Mpigi announced NUP supporter Mr. Nkinga as Chairman-elect for Buwama town council. Mr. Kalyango also won councilor for Konkoma ward in Mpigi Town Council.

The duo never campaigned in their respective areas but victory found them wherever their captors detained them.

Over the past few months, a couple of Ugandans, especially the youth have been rounded up by unidentified people. The relatives of the victims have suspected the unidentified people to be security operatives.

Many of the kidnapped have had totally zero contact with their families ever since. It has taken months for some, and the crackdown seems to continue.

According to reports, almost all of those arrested are supporters of the National Unity Platform party. Therefore, the loved ones of the victims suspect the military is behind their arrests. They also think these arrests have a link to politics.
