The Wamala regional police spokesperson, Rachael Kawala said the incident happened at Kazira village in Kassanda district. Jeniffer Tumuhirwe, the infants mother discovered her baby defiled by the man. She reported immediately reported to the police.
After his arrest, police carried out a test to determine Peter Byekwaso’s HIV status and to which he tested negative.
Kawala also said that there were witnesses who gave statements to the police after Byekwaso’s arrest. The police said they will seek the services of another qualified medical person to re-examine the baby and to extract blood samples. The police will use the test results from the blood samples to prosecute the suspect in court.
Cases of defilement have recently risen in many parts of the country. In 2019, a 38-year-old man in Mpigi district raped his 7-year-old niece infecting her with HIV/AIDS. He defiled the girl on three different occasions and also threatened to kill her if she reported him to anyone.
Another 32-year-old Daniel Kasule defiled a 7-year-old girl in 2019 and gave her shs500 so she could keep quiet.
In the annual police report for 2019, the police recorded a total of 13,623 cases of defilement. The Mityana case is just one of many other cases of defilement the police has recorded across the country this year.
