The cargo train derailed and blocked traffic at the roundabout for over two hours before engineers disentangled the locomotive from the wagons. They cleared the road and the traffic resumed its usual movement.
Vendors on the railway line were forced to scamper to safety, and luckily no one sustained any form of injuries.
After engineers determined the cause of the train accident, Mr. Abubakalo Ochaki, the operations manager at URC confirmed the findings. He said the crossing where the accident occurred has had issues before because of heavy traffic on the road.
‘’The crossing has other road users and normally when trucks cross there, sometimes they shift the gauges and eventually when the train comes, the locomotives and wagons may not fit on the gauge,’’ he said.
He added that a car possibly got stuck on the gauge and when they removed it, the gauges had shifted. This made the locomotives not fit there causing them to derail. He said the gauges that had shifted were replaced to avoid further incidents.
Until yesterday evening, the wagons were still at the scene of the accident with police officers deployed to guard them. It is unclear though, whether or not the cargo had been offloaded.
