A tragic incident unfolded in southern Montenegro on Wednesday, as a gunman took the lives of at least 10 individuals, including two children, as reported by the police.
The unfortunate incident occurred within a restaurant in the Cetinje area, where a dispute among guests escalated into a violent confrontation, leading to multiple fatalities, according to a police official cited by public broadcaster RTCG.
The assailant, later identified as Aleksandar Martinović, ultimately took his own life. The gravity of the situation prompted the government to announce a three-day period of national mourning, with Prime Minister Milojko Spajic expressing profound sorrow over the events.
Loss of innocent lives
Interior Minister Danilo Saranovic revealed that the victims included the gunman’s own family members, two children of the restaurant owner, and the owner himself.
Saranovic attributed the tragedy to strained relationships among individuals involved, as reported by AFP news agency.
Several individuals sustained life-threatening injuries in the shooting and were admitted to the hospital for urgent medical care, according to statements attributed to Montenegro prime minister.
Despite fleeing initially, the gunman met his demise after a confrontation with the police, culminating in a fatal self-inflicted injury.
Occurrences of mass shootings are uncommon in the small Balkan nation, underscoring the exceptional and distressing nature of this heartbreaking event.
