The ones being flashed out are those living illegally in host communities along the borderline with Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
A joint effort that happened earlier in the week received a green light from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Minister of Security. The operation saw over 18,000 Congolese who had camped in Kibaya, along the borderline with DRC removed by Security.
A big group of Congolese decided to head on to the Nyakabande transit camp located 12 Kms in-land into Kisoro district. However, others opted to head on home using the Mupaka border in Busanza Sub County towards Rutshuru, North Kivu.
According to Sekandi, positive results are coming from the operations. He however noted that some other Congolese found in buildings are asking for more time due to the rent they had already paid.
He said that these requests cannot be accepted since these individuals are living in the country illegally. More to that, these individuals are unwilling to follow the laws, including the internationally recognized refugee act.
According to the refugee act, no alien or foreigner fleeing a country of origin for political reasons must at least stay 50Kms away from the border of the country they are fleeing from.
Congolese have for the last six months been living close to their country border in Bunagana town council. This is with hopes of returning home soon.
In separate news by NEWSLEXPOINT.com, in recent developments, the Democratic Republic of Congo closed its border with Rwanda. This follows an incident that saw a DRC soldier shot dead while in the country’s territory.
The closure of the border was the most recent escalation in the diplomatic crisis between the two countries.
