In the inaugural match of the AFCON U-17 championships at El Bachir Stadium in Mohammedia, Eastern Morocco, the Uganda U-17 national team, affectionately known as The Cubs, endured a demoralizing 0-5 loss to Morocco.
Ilies Belmokhtar and Ziyad Baha Abedlahaj emerged as the stars of the game, each scoring twice, while Driss Ait Chiekh secured another goal on the festive day of Eid.
Morocco wasted no time in asserting their dominance, seizing the lead within three minutes through Belmokhtar’s header, which was eventually validated after a VAR review following an offside call.
Morocco’s early lead and VAR drama
Expanding their advantage, Morocco swiftly doubled their lead in the 8th minute with Chiekh’s header, establishing a 2-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes. Abedlahaj further extended the lead to 3-0 with a penalty goal confirmed by VAR in the 23rd minute.
Belmokhtar showcased his skill with a remarkable finish just before halftime, securing a comfortable 4-0 lead for Morocco. His second goal in the second half, capitalizing on a goalkeeper error, sealed the victory at 5-0.
Moroccan Goalkeeper Bellaarouch Thwarts Uganda Cubs’ Recovery Efforts
Despite valiant attempts by Uganda Cubs’ Wanyama and Torach, Moroccan goalkeeper Chouaib Bellaarouch, hailing from the prestigious Mohammed VI Academy, stood firm and prevented any comeback by the opposition.
With this commanding performance, Morocco, known as the Atlas Cubs, emerged at the top of Group A with three points and a substantial goal difference.
Zambia and Tanzania join the competition in the group, all competing for a spot in the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar, where only ten African countries will secure qualification.
