Its lukewarm reception amongst opposition members is likely to let Muhwezi off the hook. It is not clear why some opposition MPs are dilly-dallying about signing the motion.
Some Opposition legislators have expressed disappointment in many of their colleagues. Apparently, they are yet to append their signatures on the motion intended to censure the Minister of Security Maj.
Gen Jim Muhwezi. The MPs are accusing him of doing nothing in the face of increasing human rights violations. Since he is the Minister of Security, opposition thinks they should hold him accountable for the ongoing torture in the country.
However, only 31 opposition legislators have appended their signatures on the motion so far. The motion requires at least 176 signatures for it to succeed.
Some of the opposition MPs have accused Government Chief Whip Thomas Tayebwa of intimidating NRM MPs against signing the motion.
In defense, Tayebwa said the grounds given by the opposition to censure Muhwezi are too weak. He says it’s not the minister who is directly torturing people. This, however, does not seem to bother opposition members at all.
