In the scuffle, Odira screamed at the top of his voice then made his way towards the officer whom he eventually grabbed and punched. Those nearby said they heard the infuriated MP screaming ‘vote rigging, vote rigging, vote rigging.’
Uganda Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said they are doing their best to determine the circumstances that led to the incident.
“Odira had other platforms to address his issues. Nobody at the moment can tell what happened to our dear honorable before running out of control,” Enanga said.
He revealed that they intend to summon the legislator to record a statement following his barbaric conduct. Such misconduct apparently stains the country’s image in the East African Community and on the international scene.
The Speaker of Parliament Anita Among also condemned this act saying she cannot be the leader of hooligans.
“I am sending a warning, and this must be the last warning. Let’s have respect for each other, respect for the institution. This is where you live day in day out. But when we start fighting and you beat a police officer, what if he opens a case on you?” She asked.
She reminded the legislators of their duty to the country saying each and everyone of them belongs to Uganda.
