Agnes Taaka, the chairperson of the committee led the legislators to visit the prison on Friday where they are holding the prisoners currently. Taaka said they were able to speak to Nubian Li, a close friend and ally to NUP’s Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine. Nubian Li spoke on behalf of all prisoners.
Taaka said the representative told them how the prisoners were treating prisoners. He also narrated how they have been denied even the slightest chance at bail. She said when they visited the sickbay, they found three sick NUP supporters. The three claimed that they had not yet healed from the pain inflicted on them during their arrest last year.
MP of Kawempe North, Latif Ssebaggala said some of these prisoners need private medical attention immediately. He also said that their inspection of the dining area revealed that they feed the prisoners poor quality food and it is usually half cooked.
“We met some who are really not in a good health condition. They told us that most of their colleagues are coughing which means that congestion is a lot. The treatment here can not be enough, they should be allowed to get private treatment,” Ssebagala said.
Kitalya Prisons came under scrutiny after police detained most of the opposition supporters they arrested in recent elections there. Since then, there have been claims that many of them have been tortured while in detention and fed on half-cooked food.
Last week, Speaker Kadaga instructed the Human Rights Committee to investigate the claims. This came following the release of Kawempe North MP-elect Mohammed Ssegirinya from Kitalya. They immediately checked Ssegirinya into a hospital after his release.
