MPs Summon Health Ministry For Inquiry Into Poultry-Related ARV Usage

The Ugandan health ministry has been summoned before Parliament to address concerns over the alleged use of antiretroviral drugs meant for people living with HIV/AIDS in the poultry industry.

This follows revelations made on Wednesday by Namisindwa district Woman NRM MP Ms Sarah Netalisire Kayaga while interacting with a team of researchers from Makerere University led by college of Health Sciences deputy principal prof.Isaac Kajja.

Members of Parliament summoned the health minister and senior officials to appear before the committee to respond to the allegations.

Furthermore Prof. Kajja and Dr Hussein Oria warned the practice saying it risks exposing consumers to cancer and increasing microbial resistance.

Meanwhile it’s claimed some ARV drugs are being diverted from government medical stores and sold illegally to farmers.

The drugs are used to accelerate the growth of chicken

ARVs, the life-saving medications that suppress the virus and allow HIV positive individuals to lead healthy and productive lives, are provided free of charge by the government.

However, there are reports that certain drugs like Efavirenz are now being used to accelerate the growth of chickens. Farmers are said to be mixing crushed ARV tablets in chicken feed due to the belief it can boost weight gains, though this is unproven and poses major health risks.

MPs warned the misuse of medicines undermines treatment programs and could spur resistance to drugs.

The health ministry denies any institutional involvement but said they are investigating claims some rogue medical workers may be illegally supplying ARVs. They face tough questioning from lawmakers on measures to stamp out corruption, strengthen oversight of medical supplies and protect patients.

The allegations have caused concern HIV treatment could be jeopardized as drugs are diverted away from those who need them most. The National Drug Authority and medical store officials will also testify before the committee seeking answers.
