Mr. Museveni Is Not Serious About Ending Torture – Joel Senyonyi

MP Nakawa East, Joel Senyonyi said if Museveni was serious about ending torture, it would have ended. The NUP Spokesperson says the torture is intentional on certain people who seem to be against the regime.

“Mr. Museveni was never serious about ending torture. If he were, it would have ended. If torture is not government policy, as you say, how many culprits have been arrested and punished? We all have to speak against torture because everyone is a candidate,” Joel Ssenyonyi.

Senyonyi was at NBS Barometer show discussing the ongoing torture in the country. Hon. Betty Nambooze says in a time like this Besigye and Kyagulanyi don’t have to unite at all. According to her, everyone can start the fight against torture where they are.

“We don’t need to unite as far as torture is concerned. We simply have to start from where we are to fight against torture. It doesn’t require Besigye and Kyagulanyi uniting.”

Hon. Haruna Kasolo Kyeyune, Minister of State Microfinance and Small Enterprises, however, has criticized the strategy of opposition MPs.

He says, they will come back from the strike as usual because it is not the first time they are doing this.

“These people will soon be perceived as drama actors. They once said if Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana are not released, they won’t return. Why did they return? Even now, I know they will. That waters down the relevance of their actions.”

Kyeyune also accused the opposition of double standards saying they keep shut in certain torture incidents.

“Some people have been tortured by people putting on political colours, no one is condemning them. I never saw anyone condemn the fight that broke out in Parliament. The MPs ashamed us. That is a place of legislation.”
