The former presidential candidate said that they actually conquered Kampala on the 25th of January. They however decided to push the date of the Liberation a day further to 26th January.
This was done to distance themselves from the atrocities of one of the previous presidents, Idi Amin Dada. Amin toppled Obote’s government on 25th January 1971.
Muntu added that he actually felt that this was the right thing to do and still has that feeling. However, what everyone feared has reocurred again although its happening at a different time.
“Capturing K’la on 25 but declaring 26 as the DAY was to distance ourselves from Amin’s excesses. A feeling I had then & now. The date issue seemed a detail then. However as in the job, what we feared most has come to pass. Different dates but same trend. Who bewitched this Country?.” Muntu said.
Yesterday was the Liberation day with the government celebrating 36 years since it took power.
A group of young men led by the then disgruntled former presidential candidate Yoweri Kaguta Museveni went to the bush.
This group accused Dr Apollo Milton Obote of vote electoral malpractice and extra judicial killings. Museveni wasn’t the strongest opposition leader then as it was DP’s Paul Ssemwogerere.
Fortunately Museveni’s group captured power but the same things they fought so hard to erase are the same things they have been accused of re-propagating.
This has seen the party lose many of its strong men such as Dr Kiiza Besigye and Mugisha Muntu. These have moved on to form their own political parties to uproot the government they helped to bring in.
