Museveni To Increase Funding For Political Parties

President Museveni argues the increase will enable political parties to efficiently carry out their activities of mobilization.

“All discussions to have funding for political parties in the country increased from Shs10 billion to Shs30 billion have been finalized,” he said.

The President made this revelation in Kampala on Sunday while flagging off the distribution of bicycles to NRM leaders at village levels throughout the country.

Referring specifically to the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, the President said there is need for the party to invest more in capital development where payment of rent for countryside party offices and staff arrears will have to be covered.

He said the provision of the 68,000 bicycles to the 68,740 village branches across the country had been overdue but political funding has been limited. He therefore thanked the donors who had provided the resources to finally procure the bicycles.

The President also promised that after raising money for Local Council Village Chairpersons, party leaders at sub county levels would soon get motorcycles as district leaders are given vehicles to ease on transport.

While referring to the NRM secretariat structure in Kampala, President Museveni said through fundraising, he had been able to get $1.9m (Sh6.9b) and pay off the Indian who used to own the building.

“I managed to do this because I started NRM party fundraising 50 years ago,” he said.
