President Museveni was in Koboko District to launch phase four of the national backbone infrastructure connectivity project for West Nile and Karamoja sub-regions.
The government is partnering with the World Bank to connect internet to districts of Pakwach, Nebbi, Arua, Yumbe, Koboko, Adjumani, Katakwi and the border points of Oraba, Vurra and Mpondwe.
The project will bring services closer to our people and also provide international connections to neighbouring countries like DR Congo and South Sudan.
Internet access is important because it comes with lots of opportunities especially for our young people. For example, Business Processing Outsourcing will become easier in these places, creating jobs for our young professionals like accountants and auditors,’Museveni said.
For the people of Koboko, your debt of a tarmac road all the way from Kampala has been settled. The debt of clean water is also cleared. We are working on that of electricity, which we shall supplement with solar power,’he said.
The outstanding demand is the Atiak-Yumbe-Adjumani-Koboko road, which the government is already planning for.
But all these are about development. We must now think of wealth creation. It brings me to what we have been preaching; commercial agriculture, industries, services and ICT sector opportunities,’he said.
The government is doing everything to support those four job-creating sectors but at an individual level, you must take initiative. For example, the four-acre model can be applied to make money out of agriculture.
I am glad to learn that the ex-service men formed SACCO. I will support it with Shs50 million. I thank the people of Koboko and West Nile for turning up in large numbers for this function,’said Museveni.
Prior to the backbone launch, I commissioned the Koboko water supply system and sanitation project. In 1969, I came here on a study tour. The town had six shops. Today, it’s a big town bustling with activity. The piped clean water will make your life easier and better,’he added.
