Museveni Officiated At International Labour Day In Agago District

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni pleased to be in Agago District today, where he officiated at the International Labour Day. Agago, hosting this ceremony is testimony of what Uganda can achieve when we unite against any kind of threat to our people and country.

He said the first formations of the Arrow Boys to take on Joseph Kony and his rebels were in the Acholi sub region, which prompted Kony to start maiming people. The government is cognizant of that sacrifice and support. Today, we are free of Kony and Karimojong cattle rustlers.

Of course the UPDF did an excellent job and I thank all the officers and men. Indeed, we have had to rely on the UPDF to come in and help the police from time to time but this is going to stop,’Museveni said.

The UPDF should not do police work and that is why we have been empowering LDUs to come in as a supplementary force, while the police improve their capacity to perform their mandate.

He said the theme for this year’s International Labour Day, linking infrastructure development and job creation, is exciting because it shows that we are moving in the right direction.

Infrastructure such as roads, railways, water transport, electricity and access to financing are key ingredients in determining the cost of production (and therefore profitability), which in turn attracts or prohibits foreign investment.

Museveni has so far opened many factories

We have been working on these factors and the results are now there to be seen. Nowadays, nearly every month, I open a new factory, employing our children,’he said.

I implore Ugandans to not mishandle business people. No economy ever developed because of its politicians, traditional leaders or even religious leaders, but rather through business people. If the business people (private sector) are mishandled, we will fail our country,’said Museveni.

However, it is not enough to talk of investments from outside alone, without encouraging local investments. For example, in practicing modern agriculture, one is creating wealth for themselves, while offering employment to others.

A healthy work force is also crucial for production. That is why we started with immunization against a few diseases when we came into power, but that number has gone up to 13. This includes vaccines against Hepatitis B and Cervical Cancer for our young girls.

The opportunities are in plenty, as government progressively solves the issue of infrastructure, cost of transport, electricity and financial services, health and education. The work is inter linked and we have made great strides, I urge Ugandans not to take us into regression.

Finally, it is with great pleasure that I join the workers in Uganda and the rest of the world to celebrate International Labour Day. I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate all the workers and employers for their contribution towards the growth of our economy,’he added.
