News is spreading fast across the world in a viral fashion, not least because it bears faint echoes of the initial reports from nearly one year ago – of a ‘mysterious pneumonia-like virus’ in the Chinese city of Wuhan. That mysterious illness, of course, became the COVID-19 pandemic that is still spreading across the world and has killed over 1.5 million people.
In Andhra Pradesh, however, the situation is beginning to look less dire, though it is still troubling. On Dec 7, the state’s health minister ruled out viral infection, as well as air and water contamination. Initial fears of the new illness overwhelming the health system have subsided.
On the bright side though, doctors in Eluru, the city where the illness was reported, say the number of cases has declined in the past two days. They also said patients were recovering quickly.
Government teams and experts from the World Health Organization are present on the ground as well. Authorities ordered for a door to door surveys to monitor the health conditions of people as investigations into the cause of the illness continue.
Notable symptoms;
As for the illness, patients have reported symptoms ranging from nausea, seizures, dizziness, and loss of consciousness. A 21-year-old Sai was out with his friends on Sunday when he developed seizures before falling unconscious in Eluru. He woke up in the hospital a few hours later feeling tired and weak, but two days later war discharged with no signs of any other illness.
A report from India’s top medical body has indicated heavy metal poisoning as the probable cause. Authorities found traces of lead and nickel in blood samples of 10 patients. However, no one knows the source of contamination yet.
