The Sports State Minister Hon Peter Ogwang has stated that the national stadium, Mandela National Stadium more known as Namboole is not yet complete.
It should be noted that the stadium was finally opened to the public yesterday after 5 years of renovation works.
This stadium hosted two Uganda Premier League matches at once yesterday. These were between BUL FC and Vipers which the former won 1-0.
The last game which was so entertaining was the Kampala derby between SC Villa and KCCA with the Kasasiro Boys beating the Jogoos 2-0.
Although the stadium wasn’t filled to capacity, large sections of people attended the games. It was here that the Minister revealed that there are more work needed on the stadium to consider it complete.
What is still missing at the stadium;
Speaking to the media, Hon Ogwang said that these were just test matches. However, the contractor is about to hand over the stadium to the Ugandan government. The Minister said that the big screen in the stadium is yet to start functioning although it’s already installed.
More seats will have to be put in the VIP section plus the executive box. There is a running track that will also be put in the stadium. Besides the floodlights being used are temporary and permanent ones will have to be installed.
Furthermore, the Minister said that they will also cover the stadium to make sure that all those seated in the stadium aren’t interfered or inconvenienced by rain. According to the Minister, this is one of the stadiums the country plans to use in the 2027 AFCON games.
Once all this is done, the stadium will be presented to CAF for evaluation. The Minister is optimistic that it will then be approved by the African football governing body.
