Robinah Nabbanja, the Prime Minister, has set up the National Census Council to give political oversight and advocacy of the national census 2023. Chaired by the Prime Minister herself, the council will be made up of Ministers from various sectors as well.
Some of these include Ministers of Finance, Local Government, Defense, Gender, ICT, Education and Sports, Health, and Lands among others.
“The governance structures will ensure work goes according to plan and resources are put to proper utilization for the purpose they are meant for,” said Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) Executive Director, Dr Chris Mukiza.
Apparently, the government has also established necessary committees. This is right from the national census council to the lowest local council unit.
The National census council is followed by the National Census Steering Committee chaired by the Finance Ministry Permanent Secretary. Therefore, the main purpose is resource mobilization and strategic guidance.
The cabinet also recently announced a Shs 339bn budget to finance the national census and part of it (Shs 160.6bn) will cater to pre-census activities.
Such include mapping, instrument development, mass sensitization, and also recruitment of human resources among others.
“The counting of all Ugandans is starting on the 25th of August 2023,” said Mukiza.
He further revealed that they will use tablets for data collection. This is to eliminate paperwork and give better results and analysis.
