Elderly Ask Government To Recount Them To Ascertain Their Number In Population

Uganda’s elderly have asked government to institute a special census to verify the exact number of elders in the country.

Hon. Dominic Gidudu Mafaabi, the state minister for elderly persons says the number of elders according to statistics is 4% of the total population.

Therefore, with the population at over 44million people, 4% would imply that the number of elders is about 1.6 million people.

However, Hon. Gidudu said the elders feel like they are much more than that, saying they could be about 2.2 million.

They, therefore, called upon the government to carry out a special census for the elderly to have an exact figure of their number.

“Our friends of Uganda Bureau of Statistics our elders as you said are 4% which is about 1.6 million. But the elders feel they are 2.2 million. I want Uganda Bureau of Statistics to find out why the elders have that feeling,” Hon. Gidudu said.

He further revealed that the elders told him they wanted to carry out their own census but he advised them against it.

He consequently told them that he would engage the Uganda Bureau of Statistics and follow up to see what they can do.

“They were telling me they wanted to do their own statistics but I said no. I will talk to Uganda Bureau of Statistics and since I am here, I’m talking to you,” he added.
