National Unity Platform Faces Police Warning: Consultative Meetings In Mityana District Under Scrutiny

In a recent development, the National Unity Platform ( NUP ) has received a stern warning from the police against conducting authorized consultative meetings in Mityana District.

Racheal Kawala, the Wamala Region Police spokesperson, revealed that the police have obtained information about NUP’s plans to hold these meetings on June 4.

Kawala emphasized that the police management took action on June 1, 2024, to halt any further consultative activities of the NUP, citing concerns related to public and road safety.

In a statement, she reminded the public about the restriction and issued a warning to intending participants and other members of the public, cautioning them against joining any unauthorized processions.

She further explained that the joint task force is ready to enforce the law and take resolute action against any illegal activities that undermine the rule of law. With this in mind, she urged the public to prioritize law and order during these challenging times.

This warning comes shortly after Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abbas Byakagaba suspended all NUP rallies, just two days after they had initially been cleared.

Byakagaba, who recently assumed office, instructed police commanders to ensure that National Unity Platform does not proceed with their intended rallies, including the upcoming one planned for Mityana Municipality on Tuesday.

Byakagaba justified this decision by highlighting NUP’s alleged lawlessness, which was witnessed on Friday on the Masaka road.

Three people lost their lives

The incident occurred as NUP’s President, Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, was en route to Masaka. As a result, the IGP announced that an audit of the rallies would be conducted.

The unfortunate crash that claimed the lives of three individuals within Bobi Wine’s convoy occurred at St Lawrence College, Maya, along the Kampala-Masaka Highway at 10 am.

Police authorities have attributed the tragic event to the reckless behavior of drivers and riders who were reportedly traveling at excessive speeds, disregarding the safety of fellow road users.

Fred Enanga, the Police spokesperson, revealed that the police leadership had previously met with NUP’s leadership at police headquarters on Monday of the previous week.

During this meeting, they had reached an agreement on how to conduct the consultative meetings. However, the NUP apparently disregarded the agreed-upon conditions.

In light of these events, Byakagaba appealed to the public to remain vigilant, maintain law and order, and warned that anyone acting contrary to public order and safety would be held accountable under the laws of the country.

As the NUP faces the police’s warning and the future of their consultative meetings hangs in the balance, the nation watches with bated breath to see how this situation unfolds.
