On Friday, the new Executive Director of NIRA, Rosemary Kisembo assumed office and at the function, details of this move were revealed.
Odongo said the move is currently in the pipeline. He urged her to ensure its realization by the set deadline of the year 2024.
‘’We expect a new and enhanced identity card by 2024. The journey has already begun but we would like you to grab the bull by the horns. So that by 2024 we have a new card with an electronic chip and other new features,’’ Odongo said at the function in Kololo at NIRA Headquarters.
Odongo said the reason for this electronic card is to enable people move easily to other countries. And also enable them to transact businesses.
He also said the ID will have new readable features. They will also digitalize it to hold more data on the same ID.
‘’It will be more robust than what we have now,’’ Gen Jeje Odongo said.
On the issue of expiry dates on the new ID, the Minister said the government will decide on that issue.
The current population in Uganda is over 40 million people, but only 25 million of those registered.
The Internal Affairs minister, as a result, asked the new NIRA boss to ensure that all Ugandans register and get their IDs because it is their right.
