With this, they hope to challenge the cooperation pact signed between Museveni’s National Resistance Movement (NRM) party and Norbert Mao’s Democratic Party (DP).
Six resentful members of the Democratic Party lodged the petition.
These include Richard Lumu (Mityana South), Micheal Lulume (Buikwe South), John Paul Lukwago Mpalanyi (Kyotera County), Fortunate Rose Nantongo (Woman MP Kyotera). More still are; Richard Sebamala (Bukoto Central), and Fred Kayondo (Mukono South).
The petitioners said that Mao signed a cooperation agreement with NRM without consulting the party members first. In the agreement, he committed the party to supporting NRM’s agenda in very many different aspects.
Some of these aspects include supporting the government’s agenda and supporting parliamentary votes on matters of confidence.
Furthermore, the MPs claim that Mao’s appointment as Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs happened to be part of the agreement’s conditions.
They said that he had already taken the job so he couldn’t fail to hand over the party.
“… On Wednesday, July 20, the third respondent (DP) purportedly represented by the first respondent (Mao) as chairman general (notwithstanding the fact that in DP, there is no such position as chairman general), without any authority, consultation, or consent from the organs of the Democratic Party, and without following the provisions of the constitution, signed a cooperation with the NRM,” reads in part the court documents.
Mr Mao, Dr Gerald Siranda, and the Attorney General are the respondents to the petition.
