Minister Nobert Mao Summoned By Parliamentary Human Rights Committee

The Human Rights Committee of parliament has summoned the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Nobert Mao. He has been summoned to explain the prolonged detention of inmates who have cases of mental health disorders.

The summon comes after the committee discovered a good number of these who have been held for over 20 years now.

Uganda Prisons Services recently submitted a list of 26 Ugandans whose trials were approved by the Minister of Justice. These were approved following medical examinations that proved them mentally capable to stand trial.

However, though, legislators such as Naome Kabasharira, the Rushenyi county MP criticized a review of the list. According to her, the delay by Mao came off as reckless.

She notes that the Minister of Justice scrutinizing the medical records of the suspects is a violation of human rights.

Meanwhile Ruhinda County MP, Donozio Kahonda expressed concern over the increasing number of suspects locked up in prisons without trial, despite their files being submitted to courts of law for trial.
