NUP president, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu has come out to applaud the 17 members of his party that court released on Monday after months in jail. Kyagulanyi said that these comrades were still strong-hearted despite the persecution and incarceration.
To note, however, days to the presidential election, security forces arrested over 60 members of Kyagulanyi’s campaign trail. Court thereafter remanded them to Kitalya government prison. However, the same court released some of them on bail. The remaining 32 have been in jail for close to 5 months.
The court Martial in Makindye however on Tuesday released 17 of the 32. The rest who include famous figures Nubian Li, Dan Magic and Eddie Mutwe will go back to court on the 8th of June to see if court will accept their bail application.
Bobi Wine made sure to meet the 17 and shared the meeting details on his Facebook page.
“I spent today morning with comrades who were just released from Kitalya prison yesterday. After five months, I was delighted to share breakfast with them. Above everything else, I’m glad that their spirits are very strong despite the untold levels of torture and humiliation. Inshallah, we shall overcome. Let’s continue fighting to see that all comrades are freed and eventually to see that our country becomes free.” The NUP President and former Kyadondo East legislator posted.
To note also, security forces arrested these NUP members on charges of possessing guns among others.
However, Bobi Wine has continued to reiterate that the government made up these charges to frustrate his struggle.
