It should be recalled that for quite a while, Bwanika has called for negotiations with government. He has now intensified this after the release of MPs, Allan Ssewanyana and Muhammad Ssegirinya.
Rumors and reports from the likes of Bwanika assert that the two MPs were released courtesy of government negotiations.
The MP who made the remarks during a political talkshow was met with stiff resistance from Erias Lukwago. The Kampala lord mayor said that human rights are fought for. And there is no way as opposition they can sit on a round table with Museveni.
This is an opinion that has for long been reiterated by NUP president, Hon Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine.
Bwanika, however, opposed this vehemently. He pointed out how NUP MPs, Hon Betty Nambooze and Hon Shamim Malende got to be treated over full government participation.
According to Bwanika, the government will have spent over Shs 1.2b on Nambooze by the time she gets healed. This is more than what was even spent on the late speaker, Hon Jacob Oulanyah.
The Kimanya-Kabonera MP said that there is a well respected gentleman who found Nambooze critically ill at Rubaga hospital.
He made phone calls and later on and a few MPs converged to have Nambooze airlifted to the US. These were all negotiations with the regime and NUP let it slide. He therefore doesn’t see a reason why the party doesn’t do the same for the others in prison.
According to Bwanika, they need to be freed and go back to their lifestyles. But if the opposition doesn’t do this but negotiates for their MPs, it’s being double edged and hypocritical.
The former presidential candidate also said that NUP should let the likes of him go and negotiate with the government. That is if the party is afraid to sit on a round table with President Museveni.
He added that it will be unfortunate if MP, Ssewanyana dies as he’s said to be in critical condition. This is because there was room for NUP earlier to negotiate and secure his release with Ssegirinya.
They however kept dragging their feet despite news that the MPs’ health conditions were worsening. Bwanika wondered if NUP thought it was Museveni who would take them to hospital.
