NUP Supporters In Canada Cause Deportation Of Ugandan Ambassador

NUP supporters have reportedly caused Joy Ruth Acheng, Uganda’s High Commissioner to Canada, problems as she is set to be deported from the North American country. This is allegedly due to her recent clashes with NUP supporters.

Sources inside the Foreign Affairs Ministry state that Acheng will be deported on August 21, 2024. This is due to her impolite behavior while residing in Canada.

Acheng’s deportation notice was sent out barely one week after Robert Kyagulanyi, the president of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party, accused her of openly participating in partisan activities in Canada on X.

In a video that Kyagulanyi posted and went viral on social media, Acheng can be seen getting into a heated argument with a group of NUP supporters.

These were purportedly protesting on a street in Toronto, Canada. Apparently, she showed up at the venue with another woman all wearing yellow.

It should be noted that the host nation has the authority to designate someone persona non grata. This can be done at any time and for any reason,”. This is in accordance with Article 9 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which regulates diplomatic relations between states.

What led to the confrontation?

Claims that Achileo Kivumbi, the head of security at the NUP headquarters in Kampala, had been kidnapped by security personnel close to his residence in Nansana, Wakiso district, allegedly set off the exchange.

On August 5, Kivumbi was later accused of possessing a lieutenant colonel’s military uniform. This was at his arraignment in the General Court Martial in the City. He was remanded until September 2, 2024, at Luzira Prison.

“The problem is that you abduct yourselves. You people, stop abducting yourselves and killing yourselves, saying it is [President Yoweri] Museveni,” Acheng, a former Kole Woman MP on the Uganda People’s Congress party ticket, was heard telling NUP supporters in the video.

Additionally, she was heard threatening to contact the police to “kick you (NUP supporters) out of this place”.
