“Nyege Nyege“ Event Faces Uncertainty As Government And Parliament Fails To Agree Again

Parliament and the executive have yet again failed to harmonize their position of the long awaited Nyege Nyege event that is scheduled to take place on 15th this month at Itanda falls in Jinja.

In a meeting that was held yesterday led by the Speaker of parliament Anita Among  and the executive led by the minister of general duties justice Kasule Lumumba.

Earlier parliament had ordered the cancellation of the festival on grounds that it was associated with all kinds of immortality which brought mixed reactions among some executive as well as to the legislatures.

The prime minister had earlier okayed  the festival arguing that a lot of money had been injected in pre event preparation and many and tickets had already been sold to both foreign and local revelers.

Speaker of parliament insists

However Anita Among insisted that the position of parliament requiring the cancellation of the festival still standing and therefore tasking government to work upon the recommendation of the parliament.

Busia municipality MP Geoffrey Macho also criticized the event and said they have to fight for the integrity of parliament and its independence.

However the minister of information and national guidance Dr Chris Baryomosi called for consultations and emphasized on harmonizing position regarding the festival and emphasized strong regulations and that it’s the responsibility of the executive.

Later on the government cleared the festival following a meeting between the organizers and government officials led by former internal affairs minister Maj Gen Jeje Odongo.

Meanwhile some of the promoters of the festival argued that it was aimed developing the culture and the music industry in Uganda by creating platforms of upcoming artistes and this has left the festival “hanging.”
