Obama’s Kenyan Grandmother Dies At The Age Of 99

The grandmother of former US president Barack Obama, Sarah Obama has died aged 99 according to her daughter. The incident happened in Western Kenya earlier today.

‘’It is true she has gone to be with the lord. She passed on this morning,’’ Marsat Onyango, the late’s daughter said emotionally.

They had admitted the popular Mama Obama to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu.

For a long time, many knew Sarah best for the hot porridge and doughnuts she served at a local school. She, however, rose to fame with the 2008 election of her step-grandson Barak as the first black US president.

She became a national celebrity after the former Illinois Senator Barak Obama visited Kenya in 2006. Sarah’s homestead immediately became a tourist attraction with Obama’s November 2008 election win.

Sarah, born in 1922, at the shores of Lake Victoria, was the third wife of Hussein Onyango Obama, President Obama’s grandfather.

Although they are not blood-relatives, President Obama often called Sarah his grandmother, calling her ‘granny. On his trip back to Kenya as president, he met with her among other family members in Nairobi.

When he left office, he travelled to her home in the village of Kogelo in 2018. He joked about failing to return in 2015 because his jet was too big to land in Kisumu.
