The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has started restoring the Obongi ferry landing site. This is after flooding caused major disruptions at the site.
It should be noted that this ferry was one of the ways of transport in the business community in the Madi sub-region.
However, UNRA early this year suspended temporarily all movements between Obongi and Adjumani District via the Obongi and Sinyanya ferry route.
This was simply a safety precautionary measure to prevent any hazardous outcomes following heavy floods.
Since then, most people have been using the Laropi ferry that plies the River Nile route between Moyo and Adjumani.
The restoration of the Obongi Ferry Landing Site is crucial for resuming normal ferry services, vital for local communities. These include refugees, who rely on the ferry for access to markets, healthcare, and other services.
The repairs will strengthen the landing site to prevent future flooding and ensure the safety and reliability of the ferry service. Apparently, the repairs have already begun to have this site up and running very soon.
As per the Ministry of Works and Transport, “The ferry starts operations at 5:30am and often ends at by 7pm. It has a vessel capacity of 120 tonnes. It carries an average of 1,500 to 1,800 people per day at the crossing with a minimum of 12 trips and a maximum of 22 trips. And it takes 30 minutes for loading and offloading while the time to cross is between 10 to 15 minutes.
The ferry has a capacity of 180 passengers and cargo of 90 tonnes as per the Certificate of Sea Worthiness.”
