According to the report, up to 35 people died and 114 people were injured from 28 crashes in just three days.
Faridah Nampiima, the traffic police spokesperson said 104 crashes were reported between December 30 and January 1st. In earlier figures, 58 people reportedly died during the festive season while over 200 were injured. This was majorly due to reckless driving.
However, the DP Youth Wing President, Ishmael Kirya blames these accidents on the bad state of roads in the country.
He, therefore, asked the government to provide adequate funding for road maintenance and installing road signs instead of boating road users.
Kirya revealed that before the eve of 2023, a lot of accidents happened during the festive season and Ugandans have lost lives. He condemned the traffic officers for always pinpointing reckless drivers because there are many other causes of accidents.
“If we try to assess, you can’t actually give us that proof that actually people were driving recklessly. The traffic officers are ignoring a very pertinent issue of the bad roads which are narrow, full of potholes, among others,” he said.
Besides bad roads and reckless drivers, there are some other issues that caused these crashes. Some of these issues include driving unserviced cars and those in dangerous mechanical conditions.
For example, on December 28, a Mercedes Benz Actros trailer from Masaka heading to Mbarara had a rear tyre burst.
This caused it to ram into vehicles heading in the opposite direction. This could have happened because the driver did not have the vehicle inspected or serviced prior to driving it.
