He said he is still optimistic about the opposition’s chances to beat the ruling party side.
Ssemujju made these remarks a short while after Kamuli Woman MP, Rebecca Kadaga announced her representing no political party in the race.
Kadaga announced this after the top organ in NRM, Central Executive Committee, dropped her to promote her former deputy Jacob Oulanyah.
According to Ssemujju, the current situation presents the opposition with a good chance this time around to win the seat. He added that this is due to the divisions that were likely to arise after NRM endorsed Oulanyah.
‘’For the first time, I have a chance to win the speakership race. There is a real possibility but now it will depend on many other factors including my other colleagues in the opposition gaining confidence,’’ Ssemujju said.
He said many MPs had supported Kadaga because they thought Kadaga was so powerful she would bulldoze her way through NRM.
So seeing that she failed to represent NRM, many are now realizing that she is not as powerful as they thought she is. Therefore, they shifting their support.
He, therefore, noted that he can start from the members of his party, unlike Kadaga who now has no party affiliation.
The speakership race now has four candidates namely; Rebecca Kadaga (Independent), Jacob Oulanyah (NRM), Ssemujju Nganda (FDC), and Richard Ssebamala (DP).
The newly sworn-in members of the 11th parliament are now converging at Kololo Airstrip. They will elect the speaker and deputy speaker.
