The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has strongly criticized certain members of the Opposition for resorting to what they term as “intimidation and blackmail” against Richard Lumu (Mityana South) due to his contentious proposal to elect the Leader of Opposition (LoP).
Sadam Gayira, the National Chairperson of the PPP, voiced the party’s concerns during a meeting with the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee regarding the Administration of Parliament Amendment Bill, 2024.
Gayira expressed disappointment over the treatment Lumu received, emphasizing that regardless of the merits of the Bill, attacking his character is unjust.
Gayira shed light on the persistent challenges surrounding the LoP position dating back to Uganda’s post-independence Parliament in 1962.
While opposing the idea of electing the LoP, the PPP acknowledges that Lumu’s Bill has brought attention to systemic issues within Uganda’s opposition structure.
Upholding political diversity amidst criticism
While cautioning against the imposition of a unified leadership under the LoP, Gayira emphasized the importance of preserving the multi-party system and political freedom.
He urged opposition members to approach the debate with composure, aiming to address existing issues while honoring diverse political perspectives.
The ruling party National Resistance Movement (NRM) has vehemently opposed Lumu’s Bill, arguing that it undermines political party autonomy.
Enoch Barata and Richard Todwong emphasized the significance of an organized Opposition to challenge governance activities and advocated for inclusive participation in the country’s governance processes.
