“My problem with these people striking is going back to work without achieving what they want. Why don’t they stay home once and for all until they get what they want?”
Baker Batte said this in relation to the teachers who have been striking but recently went back to work. Arts teachers had put their tools down saying like their science counterparts, they need salary increment.
However, when the government came out and gave them an ultimatum, most of the teachers went back to their jobs out of fear of being sucked.
The executive director of Citizen Coalition for Election Democracy Uganda, CCEDU, Charity Ahimbisibwe, said the government threatening the teachers was not a good move at all.
“The threat from the gov’t to teachers is not healthy. The gov’t needs to look at the reasons why these issues arise. You can’t give a science teacher UGX 4,000,000 and an arts teacher UGX 700,000, yet they are operating in the same environment.”
However, members of the public said, this matter should not be politicized because it is not a political matter.
“Politics aside. I am a former ICT teacher working with Uganda Police. While we in ICT department earn Ugx. 2.24M, our colleagues in the CID dept earn about 450,000. Stop politicizing the matter,” a one Zachariah Mulindwa said.
