Manchester City’s head coach Pep Guardiola believes his team has a small “advantage” over championship rivals Arsenal going into their match on Sunday at the Etihad.
After playing Inter Milan at home on Wednesday, Guardiola’s players had an extra day off, while Mikel Arteta’s team played away at Atalanta on Thursday night.
The manager of Man City is content with the situation since he believes the timetable frequently works against the Premier League winners. Guardiola expressed his hopes that Kevin De Bruyne will demonstrate his fitness.
After being pulled off with a muscle issue at halftime of the midweek Champions League goalless draw against Inter, De Bruyne will be evaluated.
During a Friday press conference, Guardiola stated: “He feels a little bit better today. Tomorrow is training and we will see. He could be (involved).”
After being sidelined for an extended amount of time, skipper Martin Odegaard is unquestionably out for Arsenal.
“I’m so sorry for him,” Guardiola said. “I always like to play against the toughest squad. Of course he’s an important player but, year by year, Arsenal are getting better.”
The eagerly-anticipated encounter puts Premier League champions City against the runners-up for the past two seasons. Guardiola is pleased with the way his former assistant, Mikel Arteta, the manager of the Gunners, has developed his team.
Guardiola noted that: “They have always been tight games in the last years because we are a good team and they are good too. They are a complete team, that’s why they have been our biggest rivals in the last two seasons. Every season they get stronger”.
