Police And UPDF lose UK Aid Over Abuse Of Human Rights

Uganda Police Force, Uganda Prisons Service, and Uganda People’s Defense Force have lost a portion of UK Aid. The United Kingdom government (UK) has frozen about Shs206m (£40,909). Therefore, the UK government has put this on the constant abuse of human rights in Uganda by the forces.

Mr. James Duddridge, the Secretary Of State for Africa on behalf of the UK announced the UK Aid freezing during a House of Commons parliamentary session. This was a response from Mr. Stephen Doughty, shadow MP for Africa. He asked UK’s stand on the situation in Kampala.

“We took the decision to pause funding of three projects totaling £40,909 which were working directly with the Ugandan security services,” Mr. Duddridge said.

The three projects mentioned above include delivering human rights training to the Uganda Police Force. Delivering human rights training to the Uganda Prisons Service. And providing training materials to the UPDF.

On top of that, Paul Williams, the Stockton South Constituency Mp also called for more action from the UK.

“The international community should be isolating President Museveni for his actions. Instead, the UK is making largely symbolic gestures. It’s time for the UK, US, EU, and AU to join the millions of Ugandans who voted for change and say enough is enough,” he said.
