Police Detain Mother For Burning Daughters Over Bean Soup

Police in Nakasongola have in custody a 27-year-old mother for allegedly burning her two daughters for stealing bean sauce. Justine Namuwonge, a resident of Kyabutaika, Kakooge town council in Nakasongola district is alleged to have burnt her two biological daughters, a 6-year-old Fatuma Nagenda and four year old Hajara Nassuuna.

The two are both pupils of Kamukamu Nursery school in Kakooke. They had allegedly stolen sauce.

“Preliminary information indicates that at around 2pm, Namuwonge lit a charcoal stove and burnt the hands of her children after alleging that they have stolen the sauce,” said the Savannah regional police spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Sam Twiineamazima.

He also added that after burning her daughters, Namuwonge kept them at home without taking them to hospital for medication. However, police was informed of this state of affairs by a one Resty Kwagala.

Resty is a teacher and resident of Namunsaala zone in Kakooge town council leading to the arrest of Namuwonge.

According to police, a case of child abuse torture has been opened against the 27-year-old mother. They have also recorded statements from witnesses.

“The victims have been admitted to Kakooge health centre III for medication. The suspect is currently detained at Kakooge police station as investigations continue.”

Cases of child abuse/torture have been on the rise in recent years. In July this year, Police in Bushenyi District also arrested a 20-year-old woman.

This was on allegations of torturing her stepdaughter to death. Mr Marcial Tumusiime, the greater Bushenyi police spokesperson identified the suspect as Ms Catherine Kyokusiima, a housewife and a resident of Kyanika one cell, Rutoto ward in Rubirizi District.

“The incident happened in mid-June at Tank Hill cell, Central ward in Bushenyi Ishaka municipality. The suspect tortured her stepdaughter Faith Ankunda, 5, who later succumbed to injuries at Kampala International University teaching hospital Ishaka,” he said.

The suspect after committing the offence went into hiding until she was later arrested in Namungona in Kampala.”
