On September 7, police caught the first suspect at the Uganda Driver Licensing System (UDLS) facility at the Uganda Railway Station in Kampala. He had gone to try and secure a permit with what the police called forged documents.
“The robust security checks embedded in the UDLS process immediately flagged the transaction and the police swiftly responded and arrested the suspect,” Susan Kataike, the spokesperson of the transport ministry, said.
After a thorough police search, they found the suspect in possession of more forged documents. The forged documents also included a forged learners permit and forged certificate of confidence.
They also found a forged Uganda Revenue Authority assessment form.
Later on, the law enforcement in partnership with UDLS security officials arrested two other male suspects from Nasser Road. These two possessed forged documents on their computers and authorities revealed that these two are foreign nationals.
However though, the names of the suspects were retained by the police in fear of sabotaging the investigation. The three are feared to be part of a bigger racket.
One of the printing business owners at Nasser Road said they had been infiltrated by crooks. He also said these were tarnishing the image of authentic readers in the area.
“We are known for forgeries, yet there are many genuine traders in this area,” Mukini said.
Karaoke also appealed to motorists looking to process or renew permits to visit UDLS for authentic documents.
UDLS is a project by the transport ministry charged with licensing drivers and improving safety on roads. It produces and issues secure and computerized driving licenses.
