The National HIV and AIDS symposium happened at Makerere University Business School recently and the PM presided over the event. She revealed that discussions have commenced locally on the issue of reduced donor reliance.
“I am aware that a discussion has already started so that the current donor support is used for sustainability, instead of donor reliance. As government, this is a discussion that is long overdue,” she said.
Nonetheless, she revealed that this will require a systematic approach to ensure that achievements are not reversed. She, therefore, said the transition should not be rushed and a clear roadmap should be set up to realize this.
In other news, the Uganda AIDS Commission in partnership with the Ministry of Health is set to make two interventions in curbing the spread of HIV. This comes at a time when stakeholders are concerned about the high rising number of infections. This is especially among the younger population. The number of new infections is currently standing at 54,000. About 1.4 million ugandans are currently living with the virus.
The director planning at the commission, Dr. Vincent Bagambe says the two interventions are the dapivirine vagina ring and injectable drug. He is optimistic that if these are rolled out, they will go a long way in boosting the government’s efforts to end HIV by 2030.
