The move, Ruto said., will enable the government to achieve the goal of ensuring the country lives within its means.
“I know citizens have said there is no need for the office of the first lady and second lady but these are offices that have been there,” Ruto said.
“But because we have to live within our means, those offices from tomorrow will not be part of our equation. This is because, in the face of what has happened, we have to trim down every other area.”
Ruto spoke on Sunday during a roundtable media interview. The president also promised to cut down his office budget saying it will trickle down to other state departments in his administration.
This move comes amidst the anti-tax demonstrations that have rocked the country for the last one week. President Ruto conceded to the demands of the protesters a few days ago. However, the protesters are now demanding that he resign from office.
The country has faced a steep increase in taxes since Ruto took office. The same poor who helped push him into office are now the ones demanding that he step down. They accuse him of living extravagantly at the expense of the tax payers who are struggling to survive.
